Chamomile tea for sleep is one of those recommendations that has been around so long it has stopped feeling like information and started feeling like folklore. Your grandmother knew it. Every wellness article mentions it. But the question most people never actually get answered is: does it work, how does it work, and why does it work for some people and not others?

The short answer: Yes — with important nuance. Chamomile contains apigenin, a flavonoid that binds to GABA-A receptors in the brain and genuinely reduces the neural overactivity that delays sleep onset. It does not sedate you. It does not replace sleep medication. What it does is remove a specific obstacle to sleep — the cortisol-driven wakefulness that keeps your brain firing when your body is ready to rest. Why it works better for some people than others

Chamomile's sleep effect is most pronounced when the primary obstacle to sleep is cortisol-driven neural overactivity — the "tired but wired" state. How to use chamomile tea for sleep correctly

Most people use chamomile tea reactively — they can't sleep, so they make a cup at midnight. This is the least effective timing. Apigenin takes approximately 45–60 minutes to reach peak plasma concentration after ingestion, which means a cup drunk at midnight is working at 1 AM — after you've already spent an hour lying awake with a cortisol-activated brain.

The more effective approach is to use it as a pre-emptive transition ritual at 9–9:30 PM, before the cortisol rebound peaks. At this timing, the apigenin is active at the receptor during the window when melatonin is rising and cortisol is supposed to be falling — supporting the handoff rather than playing catch-up after it's already failed.

Brewing also matters more than most people realise. A three-minute steep produces a lighter, more aromatic cup with less apigenin extraction. A five-to-seven minute steep in water just off the boil extracts significantly more of the active compounds. Cover the cup while steeping to prevent the volatile oils — which also have relaxant properties — from escaping with the steam.

What chamomile won't do

Chamomile is not a sleep medication and should not be treated as one: It does not increase total sleep time in people with severe insomnia. It does not correct a circadian rhythm disorder. It does not replace the sleep hygiene basics — consistent sleep and wake times, dark and cool environment, reduced blue light in the evening — without which no supplement or tea will be meaningfully effective. Think of chamomile as removing one obstacle to sleep, not as solving sleep. The obstacle it removes — cortisol-driven neural overactivity — is a real and common one. But it is one obstacle, not all of them.

The ritual matters as much as the chemistry

There is a dimension of chamomile's sleep effect that is not purely pharmacological and is no less real for that. The act of making a warm drink, slowing down, sitting without a screen for a few minutes — these are sensory and behavioural cues that signal the transition from day to night to a nervous system that spends most of its waking hours in low-level threat response.

The act of deliberately transitioning — rather than falling asleep accidentally mid-scroll — gives the brain a clear contextual signal that the day's demands are over. The ritual encodes the boundary that modern life has largely erased between activity and rest.
