The deeper the red colour, the higher the anthocyanin concentration — a pale pink cup has a fraction of the active content of a deep crimson one.
Adding lemon or any acid source after steeping enhances both flavour and anthocyanin stability — the acidic environment shifts the anthocyanins into a more bioavailable form and prevents oxidative degradation. Cold hibiscus tea (steeped hot and chilled) retains its active compounds well and can be prepared in advance.

Who should be careful
Hibiscus and blood pressure medication: If you are taking antihypertensive medication — particularly ACE inhibitors — hibiscus tea may potentiate the effect, causing blood pressure to fall further than intended. This is a genuine interaction, not a theoretical one. Consult your doctor before drinking hibiscus tea regularly if you are on blood pressure medication. Similarly, hibiscus may interact with diuretics and some diabetes medications.
